Re: Stirling Owners manual

Found it by coincidence myself, thought someone from here might have had a hand in it, at some point or another. I used to rebuild motorcycles to Haynes manuals indications, so it raised quite a chuckle to see a Haynes Short Stirling manual, for me. Very nice, good work, and congrats!

German Land Mine

Hello, I don't expect there will be much about this specific, but here goes anyway. I was just recalling an event once recounted to me by my father, when he was on 25 Sqd. As far as I can recall or assume from the story, they already had Beaufighters, during the Blitz period. The base he mentioned h...

Re: Did You Know Before Going On An Operation ...

I did not know or ever hear about the oxygen mask testing from my father, nor about testing the guns "on the way out". However, he did mention that they used to wear dark purple "sunglasses" while in daylight or in lit conditions indoors before an ops, apparently to improve night...

Re: XV Sqd, 1942, W. D. Shearer

How about that? You could knock me down with a feather. Got your e-mail, and a response will be going your way very soon. I know (knew) absolutely nothing about the whereabouts of any of the members of my father's side of the family, but the names you mention are all known. This post is mainly to th...

Re: Pilot assessment: Kenley scheme

It was good reading, thank you! I can just imagine (possibly detect) some mild suppressed irritation as the squadron commanders sat down to type their reaction to the scheme, with all that they must have had on their plates at the time. My apologies beforehand for the following, as I could not resis...

Re: Airfix Short Stirling with White Ensign P.E. sets.

Thank you, John L, those diagrams were exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to find. Just at a glance I can see there were several thing I would have got wrong if I had set out to attempt the modification in the dark and by guesswork. If a conversion kit comes out, all the better, otherwise I will...

Re: Airfix Short Stirling with White Ensign P.E. sets.

Sorry for butting in on the thread. This was more the sort of subject I was looking for when I made my post a few moments ago on the Corgi Stirling thread. First off, great, inspiring and admirable work here on that kit. Hats off! One of my commanders gave me an Airfix Stirling kit about a year ago,...

Re: New Corgi Short Stirling Model

Just to say, these Corgi models are great. Now I am not a collector, but just three days ago I found one - or it found me - (a limited edition and NOT a Stirling, by the way) in a hobby shop in Medellin, Colombia, in an experience that ranks as one of the most bizarre moments of my existence. The st...

Re: XV Sqd, 1942, W. D. Shearer

Thanks for that, John, You know, as my time allows, I am becoming quite interested in this subject. As I await the right moment to broach the subject of the Record of Service with my mother, I also am considering one other personal source that might be able to contribute something to this, umm... cu...

Re: XV Sqd, 1942, W. D. Shearer

Hello again, Nothing new here yet, but a question. Since looking at the ORB's I noticed there were often quite long periods between Ops of a specific crew. Just out of curiosity, I was wondering what sort of duties were assigned to crews during those periods? Additional training? Guard duty? I am pr...
