Re: 106 lancasters

Ian, I joined the squadron in Oct. 44 for a short period coming to an abrupt end when our pilot F/lt Jack Barlow RAAF was KIA over Bremen whilst on a trip with another crew.

I would much a copy of the photo.

Re: Bomber Command Clasp

I applied for my clasp about one year ago and received it last week. Some of my friends received theirs within a couple of months.

Re: Second Dickie flights

Max, Further to my previous mesage, Johnny's log book reflects him as second pilot as opposed to second dickie, the former being a duty trip, the latter being familiarisation, As he recalls it, there was a shortage of the initial intakes of F/engs to enable the new crew complement of one pilot ops, ...

Re: Second Dickie flights

Max, I have just spoken to Johnny re- the number of second dickies uindertaken by some pilots. He experienced the same when he started his first tour with 61 squadron in 1942,In fact they were not second dickies, they were second pilots undertaking duties later undertaken by F/engs. As the F/engs. g...

Re: Official squadron, course & crew photographs.

Hello Guy,
We did not have a course photo taken at ITW Bridgnorth. We were however each given a course photo at No. 11 AGS, No. 14 OTU, and one crew photo with 227 squadron.

Re: Searchlights & Flak Images

The second photo is more realistic with just a flash leaving a pall of smoke which in daylight seemed more like a wall of flak due to the time taken for the smoke to disperse. I can only asume that the flak left the same trail as noticeable with car headlights on certain occasions. It was very disqu...

Re: Sad But True ...........

Do any other Vets share my opinion, it being that the nearest the Lanc. came being the mid upper stuck on top, I felt more protected in the rear turret with the a/c. protecting my back & the make believe that the fins gave added protection, on the downside the rear turret was miore noisy & s...

Re: An unidentified conflagration!

Good to see you both back on form ;) ;) I note that the tail wheel appears to have broken away, finishing up alongside the stbd fin. This suggests that the a/c could have slewed violently to stbd, the missing wing parts being anywhere towards the nose. If the object above the wing was a tail fin, it...
