Re: Aircraft Identification Challenge 219

Can I claim a point for saying it was very small ? ;)

Re: Aircraft Identification Challenge 219

I would say it's definitely a model/miniature, probably not more than a few inches long, photographed too close for the camera used to be able to focus. Possibly some kind of novelty item ? Like a cigarette lighter or somesuch.

Re: Dambuster print

I found this German article. My German translator tells me it says they were single-barrelled 20mm guns, but I can't verify that ! There are photos of a gun emplacement, but I don't believe it's at the Mohne. http://www.lwl.org/westfaelische-geschichte/portal/Internet/finde/langDatensatz.php?urlID=4...

Re: Dambuster print

Working on my FSX flak now. From the figures that Richard provided for the 20mm flak gun, I think I see it firing approximately 3 shells a second, at a mv of approximately 3000ft/sec. Which would mean that the tracer shells from a single gun would end up about 1000ft apart (which is a lot further ap...

Re: Dambuster print

Ah - so tracer but no bursts. Which would mean that The Dam Busters is not so off the mark after all maybe.

This is good stuff. I don't believe I've seen this subject discussed before. But it does mean the flak around the Mohne on my FSX system will need to be corrected

Re: Dambuster print

So are we saying that the attacking a/c would not have seen anything of the shells fired at them unless they were hit ?

Re: Dambuster print

I did a little more research on this. It seems that German flak guns were capable of firing shells which would burst on impact, time/distance/altitude, or proximity. Clearly impact is not the case here. Time/Distance/Altitude rather depends on where the defenders thought an attack might come from. I...

Re: Dambuster print

This is interesting. We've all got used to seeing the Mohne flak the way that it is represented in The Dam Busters, which is more like tracer - in fact there is little difference between the fire from the dam and the fire from the attacking aircraft. I'm not an expert on German artillery, but I'm gu...

Re: Dambuster print

I keep looking at the bomb-aimers blister and thinking it doesn't look right for the Type 464 a/c, but I don't have any reference to hand. The bomb release area on the main a/c (Martin's ?) doesn't look right either, but it's a bit indistinct. Then there's the supporting a/c (Gibson's ?) I know it's...

Re: Dambuster print

Well - from a quick glance - the bomb release area doesn't look quite right on the main Lanc, although it's hard to tell. Also, the far aircraft (Gibson's ?) has its altitude spotlamps on. Not sure if this was accurate - though it is recorded that Gibson did turn his nav lights on while drawing fire...
