Re: RAFVR needle in a haystack?

Thanks John and Alan - any further help would be very much appreciated. Being extremely ignorant Alan, can I ask where you looked at the GRO for that info?

All the best

Any idea which sqaudron this man flew with?

Hi, Currently researching the men on my local war memorial and one of them, Eric Pickin, has thrown up something of a mystery. He originally volunteered in 1940 and was given the service number 916981. The detail from his pay book shows that his rank from 28/2/42 was LAC and yet his trade, 'W/Op. U....

Air Gunnery Schools in the North East?

Hi, Can anyone tell me if there were any AGS's during WWII in the North East - primarily in the area of Durham/Sunderland? I am researching a man who joined the RAFVR after 1939, trained as an AG and by December 1941, when he married, was based at RAF Wittering presumably with 151 Sqn. He married in...

Re: OTU's on operational missions?

Brilliant!

Thanks for all your help and yes, the 'operation' under investigation was indeed the one referred to - the man I am looking at is Sgt Calcutt.

Thanks once again.

All the best

OTU's on operational missions?

Hi, I have read somewhere that aircrews from OTU's sometimes flew operational missions but I can't remember where I saw it. Can anyone confirm that this is correct and that I didn't just imagine it? (I am researching an individual who was killed whilst flying with 26 OTU from RAF Wing on a mission t...

Re: When did this 7 Sqn. man volunteer?

Hi Max, I always believed that the minimum rank for all aircrew was sergeant however I'm in the process of reading 'Enemy Coast Ahead' by Guy Gibson and apparently this wasn't the case in the early months of the war. He talks about one particular Hampden crew he flew with in 1939/40 in which the gun...
