Bryce Gomersall's The Stirling File confirms LK501 as QQ:L. If it is LK510, the book has the aircraft flying 18 ops with 196 Sqn. as ZO : U, W and then being transferred to 190 Sqn. where no further ops are recorded.
Cheers

QQ would make this a 1651 CU aircraft and it look like a Mk. 111. I cannot make out the serial number on the photograph but a possibility is LK495. If so, Bryce Gomersall's book The Stirling File does not indicate any squadron.
Cheers

I would also add my thanks for a great photograph. Lets see if we can find more examples of nose art relating to the Stirling (and other aircraft of Bomber Command).
Cheers

Re: Short Stirling - Nose Art
The aircraft shown with what appears to be a dinosaur on the fuselage is recorded in Jonathan Falconer's book Stirling Wings as being an unidentifed Mark 1 Stirling probably from 7 Squadron. Interestingly in what appears to be the same photograph, the book has the word Sugar directly below the nose ...

Re: Short Stirling - Nose Art
Just trying to nudge this thread back onto the straight and narrow : hopefully the forum can keep sending photgraphs of Stirlings and nose art. It is a subject that deserves a bit of publicity. My favourite example of nose art on a Stirling so far is a 196 Squadron aircraft named Per Lager Ad Aspro....

The 199 Squadron aircraft in the foreground had a nose art called "Barney's Bull".

N6070 and R9187 were Mark 1 Stirlings whereas the Mid Upper turret looks like that from a Mk. 111 Stirling. This may be another Stirling to add to the list in another thread in the forum re Stirlings with 50 ops or more.

Re: Stirling Photos from Flickr Part 1
Dave Truly magnificient photographs. Code HA-A would indicate a 218 Squadron aircraft so Steve Smith should be able to help us to identify. The nose art looks like a cartoon character called Reilly-Fowll?? (Really Foul) but I may be / am wrong. I would like to know what has been written or painted o...

Re: Short Stirling - Questions ...........
As an addition to my previous post from Bryce Gomersall’s “The Stirling File” : Revised Edition published in 1987 by Air Britain ISBN 0 85130 152 5, there is a list of Stirlings which were recorded as having 50 or more operations : 75 operations : LJ 514 – 199 Squadron 71 operations : LJ 538 – 199 S...
