John, the Browning .303. gave a cone of fire of about 20 ft at 400yds. the cone beoing caused by barrel vibrations. The 4 gun rear turret was aimed to give an overlap of these cones for maximum density of rounds within the centre of the overlap.

Re: Did You Know Before Going On An Operation ...
Hello John, apologies for my late reply. As I understand it we in 5 Group tested our oxygen masks after boarding, in addition the gunners when on night ops went on to oxygen immediately. It was suggested to us that this action improved night vision :!: (wot no carrots) ;) We were taught to assemble ...

Re: Target Photo Details
Steve, I once saw on this forum a photo of our own 227 squadrons 9J-P Lanc in flight displaying I believe crosses & colours etc. on its fins that I can recall. To my regret I did not make copy of it. I reckon that 3 Group must have planned to ensure that they flew above our 5 Group a/c. with mal...

Re: Operational Tours
Steve, I am not surprised that he took 14 months, being the F/cmdr. If his Group worked to the same rulings as 5 Group, the F/cmdrs spent one third airborne two thirds chairborne covering their flight's admin duties. Johnny my pilot was F/cmdr "B" Flight 227 squadron, hence we were with 22...

Re: Operation Flight Path Records / Maps
John, there would obviously be a Group plan of the intended operation as given at the briefing, other than that I guess the only actual flight plan being that maintained by the nav's who may have retained them.

Re: Who Betrayed the Bomber Boys?
I took the opportunity to make a personal point of view call to the BBC Duty Officer today. I mentioned that the Wimbledon tournament difficulties must have taken much planning in the positioning and distribution of the dare I say hundreds including the the engineers and TV. crews. The pecking order...
