John, yes they did deflect the guns from the structure, they were called the interruptor gear.The mid upper had a 360' field of fire.

Steve, I prefered daylights, less chance of being suddenly jumped by a fighter, easier to avoid collisions etc. In theory in the event of an attack by a fighter, putting to good use our gunnery cuve of pursuit training, the drawback being the unequal challenge of .303's against cannon fire.
