Re: Tiger Moth pilot under training

Ohhh you're a hard lot! No more coffee and cake for you Richard my lad!!! :) Yes John, it's an absolute delight to fly over our beautiful countryside but it also emphasises why lads who were trained over the broad plains of Canada, Australia, Rhodesia etc needed further time at an AFU in the UK to b...

Tiger Moth pilot under training

A couple of clips from my recent training on the Tiger Moths, Adam will remember these well no doubt: https://youtu.be/BMVxDul_kX4 Along with each exercise there's a drill or patter to be learned - when flying and especially turning the drill is "Look out" to establish that all is clear ar...

Re: Anzac Day 2015 - Australia & New Zealand

Prop swinging today Adam....went down for a lesson but we agreed that it was too "lumpy" for any meaningful instruction in the air, so we had some on the ground! "Fuel on, throttle set, contact!" Hard enough work on a warm sunny day, the engine wasn't behaving itself so we had to...

Re: Elementary Flying Training Syllabus

Great reading and very informative, Max. Kerry Thanks Kerry, I learn something new every time I look at it. I recently sent a copy of it to Dave Newnham who's a bit of a RATG specialist, he's extracted info from it and put it in tabular form which gives a new viewpoint on Dad's time at 24 BG and NS...

Re: Restored Blenheim Bomber Flying Again

Couldn't agree more John....what we desperately need now is a Mosquito!

PS I can hear a Harvard overhead right now, such a distinctive engine noise.

Re: Elementary Flying Training Syllabus

Pete, I'll post some extracts from my father's logbook as soon as possible, it should answer your queries for both EFTS and SFTS. As far as I know the system that evolved not only remained in place for the rest of the war but is still the backbone of the syllabus today.

Just do it Kerry, life's too short! I'm sure Shell won't mind you splurging the retirement funds! As a friend said to me, life's about experiences, not stuff!

Re: Anzac Day 2015 - Australia & New Zealand

Exactly the same reason for me Adam, I wanted to know at first hand what Dad, Max and thousands of others went through in their ambitions to be pilots, including those who were scrubbed. Although I've done a fair bit of small aircraft flying, I didn't appreciate the complexity of keeping a Tiger Mot...
