460 Sqn links & Much More - Excellent site

Post by K4KittyCrew »

Hi Folks,

Having seen this site numerous times and found many great stories and links, I thought I'd better post it here. This site covers a lot of squadrons, nationalities, etc.

I thought this was a lovely photo to post. The crew look very relaxed.

Hi Kerry,

Just doing a bit of searching and came up with these details.
Lancaster Mk 1, ED421, UV-U, Ex 38MU 27th April 43, lost 23 / 24th August 43 ......... ( so this photo was taken between this time )
The crew lost on that night ............( which may not be the crew in the photo )

Details from Chorleys volume 4, page 288
NOTE - Chorleys list codes of AR-? but as you can see the photo, it is UV-U, crossed referenced with Harry Holmes - Avro Lancaster, The Definitive Record
T/O from Binbrook. Those perished are buried in the 1939-45 war Cemetery.
F/S Gay RAAF sustained two broken legs when the Lancaster exploded and he was repatriated on the 6th Feb 1945, arriving home on board the Arundel Castle.

Crew -
P/O A T Richards RAAF PoW
Sgt W A Finlay +
F/S K Gay RAAF PoW
Sgt J C Munro RAAF PoW
Sgt J G Collins RAAF +
Sgt T Smale +
Sgt J Marsh RAAF +

Cheers,
John

That is a great photo and the first time I have seen it. The crew is not Richards' crew who were lost on 24 August over Berlin but consists of Pilot Officer Eddie Hudson DFC, Captain (centre with the headdress on) along with his crew which at that time (approx May 1943) consisted of SGT D Jones, SGT Young, FSGT J Austen, SGT C Rose, SGT F Ward, and SGT J Mardell.

Eddie flew it on 11 of 12 ops from 4 May 1943 until he left the Squadron in July. His last op of this tour was on 28 June 1943 in ED 421. Given that U Uncle was taken on strength on 28 April it is likely Eddie was allocated this aircraft as his until he was posted to 27 OTU on 15 July 1943 as FLTLT (Acting SQNDLR) E.A. Hudson DFC and Bar at the completion of his second tour of operations.

John,

What a great photograph, and how pleasing to know the crew survived their tour(s).

Interesting, the Lanc seems to be dispersed on grass, did Binbrook have grass dispersals?
