Historians have spent decades collecting random pieces of the aircraft from around the world and are now putting it together like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
Parts have been salvaged from several crash sites and other parts have been collected from scrap yards, airfields and even back gardens.
Dave Morris, curator of aircraft at RNAS Yeovilton’s Fleet Air Arm Museum in Somerset, where the plane is being built, said the reconstruction is like as life-sized Airfix kit.
‘We have reached a point where for the first time we can lay out the aircraft in full scale,’ he said. ‘We have been laying out the pieces over the past two months.
‘It is like a giant jigsaw puzzle or Airfix kit. It really has grown before our eyes. Nobody working here has seen a Barracuda before.
‘We have more pieces here than anywhere else in the world. This is the first time in 50 years a complete aircraft has begun to take shape.’
