Headed for the Scrapyard .... If we could wind back time

Amazing how things change over time. If only we could wind back the clock.

I think the aluminium was more important than an obsolescent bomber John, but you are so right of course. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing (and don't our politicians consistently lack foresight!).

Sadly the politicians in those days had $ & £-S.P. in their eyes and the aluminium was worth more to them than saving
some of these great bombers especially a Short Stirling from the breakers yards.

I know that you could buy a brand new crated Tiger Moth for as little as £25.00 post-war. I wonder what a Lanc or a Stirling would have cost a private buyer who intended keeping it in flying condition? Some were clearly sold to foreign governments.

Several years past, Coleys scrap metal merchant had dozens of various a/c in all stages of condition.
I often visited there when I needed any DIY materials such as screws, cable etc. My favourite step ladders being aluminium cost me just the weight of the scrap aluminium, a few pence. Most of their stock breng brand new bearing Ministry labels. Their conditions of sale allowed them only to sell at scrap value

My son as a lad spent much time in the cockpits of such as spitfires, Lanc nose sections , post war jets etc. Coleys site office being the fwd Brabazon fuselage.
