Hi Christophe,

There seems to be a cross engraved near the top of the tower. Is it some kind of mausoleum? Perhaps for AH himself?

;) not bad, but here's the answer:
speer germania.jpg

when AH decided to rebuild berlin into GERMANIA (the so-called 'world capital') his "first architect" albert speer wanted to test the ground - it's a wellknown fact, that berlin is "build on sand", and especially the planned "Triumphbogen", more than four times bigger than the 'arc de triomphe" in paris, seemed to be a bit to heavy; so they took hundreds of tons of concrete for a simulation of the weight of one column (!!!)

the result: it didn't work, it sank into the ground (not much, but too much), and because this masterpiece of human hybris is standing right in the middle of berlin, it's not possible to destroy it, even today, where the mankind seems able to destroy even a whole planet...

sounds crazy but it's true

cheers from Berlin,

christophe

Thanks once again for your comments and images.
I've read Speers book and found it extremely interesting.
Both his book, along with Bomber Harris book, are my all time favourite reads.
Cheers
