Great photos W4783 ............. would it be fair to say the first 'glass' window above the bomb doors has been blacked out?

Yes it looks like it is blacked out. I also noted that it does not have the "'Window"' chute fitted on the starboard side nose. Maybe a newly issued aircraft :?: It still looks fairly clean, unless it has been scrubbed up for the Queens visit.

FWIW, 156 Squadron had a horrendous run of losses at the beginning of January:

1/2 Jan 44 - Berlin, 4 FTR
2/3 Jan 44 - Berlin, 5 FTR
5/6 Jan 44 - Stettin, all returned.
14/15 Jan 44 - Brunswick, 5 RTR

14 a/c FTR in four ops. Bomber Command stood down for the first two weeks of February, with the intention of training and building up the Squadrons. The campaign resumed on 15/16 Feb with the biggest Berlin raid of all - 893 a/c detailed. Berlin was laid on/scrubbed on 16, 17 and 18 Feb. After that, the pressure on Harris to conform with the USAAF's 'Big Week' was intense and Berlin dropped off the menu until 24/25 March (72 a/c FTR). It's a sad irony that the USAAF visited Berlin four times in early March - in daylight - with relatively light losses. This is when the US takes primacy in the European air war.

There would have been a lot of new aircraft and new crews in 156 Squadron in Feb 44.

Hi,

Following on from Richards post on 156 Squadron, I would strongly recommend "They Led The Way ~ The Story of Pathfinder Squadron 156 By Michael P Wadsworth" a very good book.
Cheers
