Hi John.

Here is Stirling LJ514 EX-B RAF 199 Squadron Lakenheath circa 1943.
Guess where the crew came from ? The Koala is a good clue?

Regards

Bob

Teetotal Aussies? Perhaps because they had no choice in the UK. As one former 463 Sqn skipper told me on ANZAC Day this year, there were only two good things about English beer: (a) you didn't have to worry about it going flat, and (b) you didn't have to worry about it going warm.

This, he said was because (a) it already WAS flat, and (b) it was already warm too. 8-)

There is no paralell in warfare, to such courage and determination in the face of danger, over so long a period. Such devotion, should never be forgotten.

Just trying to nudge this thread back onto the straight and narrow : hopefully the forum can keep sending photgraphs of Stirlings and nose art. It is a subject that deserves a bit of publicity. My favourite example of nose art on a Stirling so far is a 196 Squadron aircraft named Per Lager Ad Aspro. : LJ923 : 7T-A, ZO-D. I recognise that route so well.

The example of nose art that I have been searching for many number of years is a photograph of a 199 Squadron aircraft : EH909 : EX-Z : Semper in Excreta. This aircraft was reliably recorded as also having a flapping toilet roll on the fuselage. Having access to a logbook and the ORB, I can understand why.

Thought I'd transfer some of these photos from other posts over here. Thanks Douglas for pointing them out.

The aircraft shown with what appears to be a dinosaur on the fuselage is recorded in Jonathan Falconer's book Stirling Wings as being an unidentifed Mark 1 Stirling probably from 7 Squadron. Interestingly in what appears to be the same photograph, the book has the word Sugar directly below the nose art.

I cannot remember if I flagged the other aircraft up but this was Barney's Bull of 199 Squadron.

This was taken off BK659 (which was coded BU-X at the time) from 214 Squadron in July of 1943 after the Shattock crew finished their tour. They named the kite "The Krappen Kracker".
