Stirling undercarriage controls

The Society has been asked about the Stirling undercarriage quoting a pilot
“When you had taken-off and selected up the undercarriage lever you had to look hard before you could detect any movement in the undercarriage at all."
Questions are - did you have to select the undercarriage lever to the up
position and if so, how was it done? Or was it already in the up position.

Can anyone clarify this please?
