Many thanks to jamesinnewcastle for some wonderful information as regards the crash of Stirling Mk3 LK517. This aircraft was on a training flight from RAF Wigsley when it crashed onto the Co-op farm in Shildon Co Durham on 31 May 1944 at around 1715 hours. The crew of 7 were all killed. There appears to be quite a lot of information on the site already as regards the crew etc,.so I will refrain from overloading the site unless there is a request. A relative of the Navigator,Sgt Nathaniel Hugh Crawford from Larne. Co Antrim, N. Ireland has been in touch with our local history group and it appears that his widow is still alive. His body was interred in the family plot but the CWGC still erected a headstone next to the grave. Air Gunner 2209661 Sgt. Joseph Lawton from Liverpool was buried in Anfield cemetery Sect.5 Grave 869.
