From W R CHORLEY BC losses 1943
Wellington X ZO ? 196 Sqn TO 1944hrs Leconfield
Sgt A Lucas
F/O K A Smart
Sgt A W E Wilson
Sgt H G Allen RCAF
Sgt D Andrew
Lost without trace, crew remembered on Runnymede memorial
I was going to suggest contacting the relevant war cemetery to see where the crew were initially found but, not in this instance. Its probable that this a/c along with its crew were either atomized by a direct flak hit, crashed in target area and consumed ...... or may now rest in a watery grave. After nearly 70 years and no wreckage or trace of them found, its a reasonable assumption. Another possible scenario is, the a/c and crew were found but were unidentifiable at the time, the crew buried as unknown airmen?
There may be something contained within the MRES files for this a/c?....or Sqn ORB (last known position)?
The RAF MRES files are currently being transferred to the national archive https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... _Packs.pdf

Re: help guys Wellington HE548
Geiger claimed 2 Wellingtons, among other types, on this night. Both over land, so can possibly rule out the watery grave. One shot down 5km SW of Ahaus, at 22.52, the other WNW of Borculo, at 23.15.
Both claims were 196sqdn aircraft and within 30km of each other.
The one attacked at Borculo fits with HE385, which crashed nearby,at Zwiep, so highly likely that HE548 is the one attacked at Ahaus.

There is no paralell in warfare, to such courage and determination in the face of danger, over so long a period. Such devotion, should never be forgotten.

Well done Alan! Was the a/c attacked at Ahaus a confirmed kill or just a claim? Presumably,...a/c wreckage would have to be found before confirmation?
Anyone know how the Luftwaffe confirmed a/c as shot down?
