RAFVR needle in a haystack?

Post by jjrc1991 »

Hi,

I'm trying to research one of the men on my local war memorial. the problem is I have virtually nothing to go on....

What I do have is the following: LAC Raymond J. Davies, RAFVR. Died North Africa 27th July 1943. Buried Medjez-el-Bab War Cemetery, Medjez-el-Bab, Tunisia.

What I want to know is whether or not LAC Davies was aircrew and if so, with what squadron did he serve? That is assuming that all RAFVR were aircrew?

Can anyone help.......please?

Hi Jeff,

You certainly have put the correct heading on this thread ...... :D
I'll do a search and see what I can come up with.
Died in North Africa?
Wouldn't think it would be Bomber Command ..........possible Transport / Coastal Command.
They flew a lot of the old aircraft of Bomber Command.

I'll have a dig and come back later in the week.
Cheers,
John

He was with 323 Wing according to GRO. Most likely ground crew, given his rank. 323 Wing was a Fighter Wing.

Thanks John and Alan - any further help would be very much appreciated. Being extremely ignorant Alan, can I ask where you looked at the GRO for that info?

All the best

You have to go to an Ancestry Site (i use Find My Past) and type in details, then sort through the hundreds of hits until you find the right person. The numbers opposite his name, are the Volume and page numbers of the register they come from if you want to order a copy of his death certificate from the GRO.
