Richard William Jones - 23 Squadron POW please help!

Post by Davenport7 »

Hello all,

As you are all a cracking bunch on here I open this out to all of you.....

**I HAVE CHANGED POST DUE TO A CHANGE IN INFORMATION*** **Now looking for same name but 23 sqn!

Nick Fenton dug out his POW Questionnaire at Kew and luck be had it his signature is near on the same as the Jones that signed my grandfathers Xmas menu from Fallingbostel.

Richard William Jones
Sgt in 23 Squadron Fighter Command (believed to be Blenheims)
RAF number - 742858
He was from Little Gaddesden, Berkhampsted, HERTS
DOB 15th Feb 1917
Shot down on Alderney Channel Islands on the 8th January 1941

I am aware from recent research that P/O Richard William Jones of 23 Squadron was a POW. He escaped the forced March from Fallingbostel in April 1945 with my grandfather Les Davenport (7 Squadron) after they bribed a gaurd with an RAF watch to 'turn a blind eye' so they could make a run for it. They spent 6 days living off the land until they met the advancing allies.

I do have a picture of him with my grandfather taken after the war in August 1945. I will try to attach soon.

I am welcome to any additional support as I am really drawing a blank.

I appreciate assistance in anyway possible.

Regards

Ian Davenport

Hi Ian

I retrieved such a questionnaire recently for someone, not long ago either! While I can't help you directly I can show you what that questionnaire looks like, if you don't already know.

The information on them varied from scant to very angry, I suspect that many returning POWs just wanted to get home rather than report on what happened to them.

Ian

Nick Fenton hopes to get to TNA this week so if you want to contact him with your request he says he will be happy to get a copy of the relevant file for you.

Regards

Pete
