I'm currently typing up my uncle's log book. When I got to his ATS training at 6SFTS, the lessons were in code. While this was also done for his time at EFTS, a sheet with the lessons and codes was included. This is not the case for the ATS training. The codes are:
A 1 to 4
B1, B1(P), B2, B3, B7
BP1, BP3
F2, F3, F4
G2, G3, G4
GP1
I 1 TO 6
N1, N2, N3, N1(P)
NF 1 TO 6
R1
While some like NF are obviously "Night Flying" as they were red in the log book, the others are a mystery. Can anyone shed any light on their meaning?
The same occurs with his AFU training but I'll ask about that later.

Re: ATS Lessons
Hi Kerry,
He is a 'glossary of terms' from this forum, listed in the 'Documents' section.
May be very useful tool.
Cheers,
John

Re: ATS Lessons
Forgive my ignorance in this context Kerry, but what does ATS stand for?

Re: ATS Lessons
Max the course at SFTS was divided into two sections. ITS (Initial Training Squadron) covered basic work on Oxfords and then Ansons up to gaining their wings. ATS (Advanced Training Squadron) then taught the finer points of flying on Ansons. Until I can work out the codes, I don't know what was covered. I gather it may have been similar to what was covered at AFU when they arrived in the UK, but that is also written in codes so I don't know.

Re: ATS Lessons
Thanks Kerry, that makes sense now. Would the NAA at Canberra possibly have any files regarding training exercises?

Re: ATS Lessons
According to an SFTS Course outline wot I have (which doesn't seem to link to the abbreviations above).
SFTS Course in two parts - first 3/4 is the 'Tuition Phase', learning to fly the advance trainer. The last quarter is the 'Application Phase', learning to use the aircraft for a purpose.
Syllabus:
Handling of aircraft (day)
Instrument Flying
Night flying (local)
Formation flying
Navigation (day)
Navigation (night)
Armament
Applied instrument
Photography
Signals R/T
NB 'Applied instrument' = SBA and ZZ procedure.
HTH,
Richard
