67 YEARS AGO TODAY ..... 24th March 1944

Post by K4KittyCrew »

67 Years ago today, a group of PoW's tunnelled their way out of a PoW camp ....... known as the Great Escape. What a marvellous bench of men,
We will remember them.

...worth remembering too that the lights went out during the escape - because Bomber Command's last Maximum Effort of the war on Berlin was in the area. The operation cost 72 heavies.

I visited the site of Stalag Luft III at Sagan in 2002.Theres not much to see,as the British camp area is now in a pine forest. The only visible remains is the brick basement of the old camp theatre. In the American sector of the camp, there are some brick hut support pillars. There is also a derelect brick built building in the same area, and a couple of concrete fence posts still standing. I was told that the locals of Zagan stripped anything that was of use to them. In the woods there are many little excavation sites where people have been digging for souvenirs.Lots of broken pottery cups.plates, saucer fragments on the ground, one small piece had the Lutwaffe crest on it, so maybe the diggers are looking for complete pieces.
I took some photographs whilst I was there so I will try and put them on photobucket.

Hi Bob

I had the priviliege of meeting two Officers who survived Stalag Luft 3 and the enforced march. S/Ldr Gus Gunter and F/O Eddie Poulter, who were shot down in a 619 Sqn Lancaster.

I will look forward to seeing your photographs.

Regards Paul
