Interesting point John, I think there were a couple of different MK,s of Amazon cranes employed by the air force. Their lifting capacity varied from 5 to 7 tons i believe....more than required for lifting a Merlin? .....but, you may well be correct. A counter balance may well have been required,especially when reversing the Amazon into position.
