RAAF at War

Post by R5868 »

I picked up the "RAAF at War" series of books the other week. There were four in the series :- "These Eagles - Story of the RAAF at War" published 1942, "RAAF Log - The RAAF at War" published 1943, "RAAF Saga - The RAAF at War" published 1944 and "Victory Roll - The RAAF at War" published 1945. They are a good read covering both the European and Pacific war. The style is very 'Boys Own' and a lot of details are glossed over for security reasons but they were definitely worth the $11 each. I'll add more details when I've had a chance to read them more thoroughly. They also cover the EATS and give the statistics for training in all of the Commonwealth countries. In each volume is a list of medal recipients for that year.

I've got 'RAAF Saga' and "RAAF Log' too, so you'll have to visit me as well, Max!!

They were 'Christmas books', released at the end of each year. I believe the Army and Navy did something similar. I got my copies from an old family friend (long since passed away) who used to live up the street from my childhood home - he was an observer on Hudsons with 459 Sqn in the desert. He was one of the first aircrew veterans I ever met - I remember interviewing him for a project I did at the age of about 11.
