RAF Abbreviations

Hi all,

I have been looking at the RAF Feltwell Log for August 1941, (a big thank you to Max) and there are two abbreviations constantly recorded.
They are S.O.O. and also S.O.R.D.O.

Example; 18:30 hrs. S.O.O. advised by 3 Group Bomber Command operating tonight.
19:40 hrs. S.O.R.D.O. passed to 3 Group times over target and route.

Any of you fine people know what the abbreviations stand for ?

Thanks for the link, never thought to try a search here first...Duhhh

It almost fit's the context in the Log, so I might call it Station Operations Officer until I find something better for S.O.O.

Maybe Steve with his 3 Group knowledge might have see it before ?
If anyone has another idea, let me know please.

I've been going through some early Squadron Appendices, and there is some indication which may point to S.O.O being Station Operation Order amongst the pages i have seen. For instance.......
To Hemswell Scampton Waddington.... blah blah blah... this Operation Order blah blah blah...

Thanks for that. I was not far off the mark I guess.
Still need to find out the meaning of S.O.R.D.O. but I won't loose any sleep over it

Wayne, I've just been glancing through the Feltwell pages that I copied for you. Looking at many contexts I would strongly suggest that SSO means Station Operation Officer and that SORDO means Station's O(perational?) R(??????) Duty Officer. Anybody come up with something feasible to fit the R?

Thanks for your input. I think we now have a good idea on the meaning of both abbreviations.

I must say, for me it's a fascinating document. It's a great insight into the day to day activities of early Bomber Command.

Gents, could it be 'Reporting' ........... as in, Station's Operational Reporting Duty Officer.

Sounds good to me John: perhaps Station Operations Reporting Duty Officer, revising my own suggestions in the context of yours! It certainly fits with the way I've seen it used in Feltwell's log.
