Re: Lancaster PB634 / SR-U , No. 101 Sqdn. , lost 28.12.1944
hello all,
the research about loss of Lanmcaster PB 634 / SR-U is finished.
in ca. 16 weeks we searched any informations about the Lanc and crew, helped by the local newspaper and some eyewhitness...
PB634 starts on 28.12.1944 in Ludford Magna, mission: bombing-railway in Bonn / germany. PB634 was a ABC-Jammer from no.101 Sqd. with a eight-man-crew.
162 Lancaster and 17 Mosquitos arrived the Bonn-area at ca. 18.45 in the evening.
At ca. 18.45 the Lancaster was attacked by a german nightfighter, Ju 88 G-6, piloted by Fw. Richard Richter from 3./ NJG 2. The PB634 was hit in the bombay from the german 20mm-cannons and explodet in the air.
all eight crewmembers died....
A second Lancaster was attacked too by a nightfighter...the NN750. This Lanc returns to england, but crashed by landing on an airfield....6 crewmembers died, 1 survived.
With help from our eyewhitnesses we found 4 spots, where wreckparts from PB634 goes down in the Bonn-area on 28.12.1944...
The complete Tail with the dead rear-gunner in Lengsdorf-village.
Wing and engines near a small forest in the south of Lengsdorf.
Parts fron the cockpit-section in Röttgen-village
We made a lecture about the Lancaster PB 634 and crew last weekend with visitors and the local-press.
We will give all informations from our research to miss Jakalyn Classen in england, she asked our organisation in may about informations to the loss from this Lancaster....,her uncle, William Classen, was the engineer from this Lancaster.
kind regards
Karacho
