I have the complete 199 Operations Record Book for the Squadron between November 1942 and July 1945. To give you an idea of what is in the ORB, it gives the crews names, aircraft code, time when the aircraft took off and returned and a short summary of what the crew saw during the raid. During the North Creake days of 1944 - 1945, the raid summary was minimal as 199 was operating as a Bomber Support Sqaudron rather than a Main Force Bomber Squadron as was the role in 1942 to late 1943.

Let me know what information you are looking for and I will be happy to help.

Cheers

Hello Douglas,

Thanks for you reply, to be honest I would like any info possible.
I have in my possession the flying jacket of Douglas Halliwell and really want to ascertain as much history as I can of his exploits.
What little I know so far is this..
He joined as an airgunner and ended up a pilot. He completed three operational tours and was awarded the DFC ,He was a member of 199 squadron I think in 1944. He ended up a squadron leader and was based in Libya for a time after the war where he was the station commander. He passed away in the 1990s.
He must have been a remarkable man . Any information concerning his history operational and otherwise would be so interesting for me.
Many Thanks in advance

If it was 1944, that would point to him serving with the Squadron at North Creake. However, I will also have a look further back to confirm he had not joined the Squadron earlier. I will be in touch as soon as I can.

Barry

Douglas Halliwell was Signals Leader with 199 at North Creake between 1944-1945 and was a special wireless operator who was involved in operating the radiocountermeasures which 199 were tasked to undertake in 100 Group. He undertook a total of forty four operations with 199 between 16 June 1944 until 2 March 1945. During that time around between mid September and late October 1944, he flew on five operations with 171 Squadron who were formed from C Flight of 199 and were also based at North Creake.

He flew on a mixture of Mandrel and Window dropping operations as part of Bomber Support duties. He also flew with a variety of crews during that time piloted by W/O Robbins, F/Lt. Button, F/Lt. Turner, F/Lt. Coventry and F/Lt. Keen. On three of his 199 Squadron operations, his navigator was S/Ldr. Michael Docherty who is the grandfather of one of the forum's members named Smiffy.

I have more detailed information re crew names, aircraft codes and date of his operations so if you let me know whether you are happy for me to contact via PM or to print the information and sent it by postal service, please let me know.

Regards

Hello Douglas

Thanks for your last message - I did send you a reply back explaining about the jacket and about displaying it in my tea room but I can't seem to find it so I just wanted to make sure you received it? Any info you can put my way would be great - just PM me - it's really helpful and interesting for me and I really appreciate your help.

Also, are you able to find any information on what he did before 199/171 squadron?

Many thanks, Barry

PS. I don't seem to be able to send a PM, do you need to send a certain number of posts before you are able to do that? i can receive them but not send them??

Barry,

I've had a look at your profile and you should be able to sent and receive PM's.
