The Stirling on the last picture appears to have spinners fitted, I've not seen that before... when, where and why? Any ideas?

Hi Guy

The one in the photo posted by John is an early Mark 1 Series 1 of 7 Squadron based at RAF Oakington.

Later Marks also had spinners, here are a couple from the book Stirling at War by Jonathon Falconer:

148 Squadron Mark IV Brindisi autumn 1944

46 Squadron Mark V Stoney Cross 1945

The later Marks were fitted with spinners and fans to combat engine overheating when towing heavy glider loads. Not sure about the early ones.

Thanks for that Dave. I will try and get hold of a copy of the book. I have gone back through all my D Day and Arnhem references and have not seen any spinners on the props of either 620 or 299 squadron MkIV aircraft, so will leave them off my MkIV build. It just shows what a huge number of variations there were within the Mks. My father remembers seeing Stirlings with waist guns, but says they were not ever adopted to his knowledge.

Possibly on a diversion or courtesy visit. The Lanc. & stirling usually attracted large numbers of americans, especially the size of the Lancs. bomb bay.

Hi Dennis and Alan,

If you look at the first photo, you'll notice some 'scribble' on the rear section of the fuselage ........ possibly this photo was taken at the end of the war???
