Yes Dennis, looking at the first photo, one can only shake their head in disbelief as to how any aircraft got through the flak.
Dennis, do you recall coming across much flak in your time?

is that top photo a long exposure or instantanious?

The tons of munitions that were sent up after our boys must have caused a fair amount of damage and casualties when it fell back to earth!

61sqdn, were attacking Tirpitz as well as Admiral Scheer at Wilhelmshaven on this night. P4343 and P4344 both lost against Tirpitz, and P4358 against Admiral Scheer. . Those who died this night were, Tagg, Waltho,Cockburn and Carnegie, the rest being taken pow. Photo is of P4344, from which all the crew survived. John, would you mind if i post the photo on my 50/61 forum

The second photo is more realistic with just a flash leaving a pall of smoke which in daylight seemed more like a wall of flak due to the time taken for the smoke to disperse.
I can only asume that the flak left the same trail as noticeable with car headlights on certain occasions.

It was very disquiting to suddenly hear shrapnel hitting our a/c, the immediate thought being an attack from an unseen nightfighter.

I lived in the London area during the Blitz, each following morning many of us would go shrapel hunting. The average piece being about 3 inches long and an inch wide also very jagged. The total weight of each casing would fall to earth as shrapnel.
