Bomber Boys

Post by a1emslie »

Dear Members,
I am hoping that someone will be able to point me in the right direction!
I was watching Bomber Boys with Ewan McGregor on the Yesterday Channel this week, and within the first minute, up popped footage of my father ( John Frederick Jenkins), giving a thumbs up as he got into a Lancaster . This was immediately followed by a clip of the pilot who became my parents' best man.
I would love to know where the original footage is held, as perhaps there is more!
The DVD is on order, but if any of you knowledgeable people know the answer to my query, it really would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
Annabel Emslie.

Hi Annabel,

I don't know the answer to your question but should no-one reply to you directly then I suggest that you get in touch with the makers of the program and ask where they got the footage from. If they are independent producers it is likely they will have approached a separate company that specialises in such footage since they probably won't have the original themselves.

The Imperial War Museum have loads of such film but there will be other sources. It is also very possible that there is more footage as TV programs prefer to show you the presenters face rather than the things of interest, never quite worked that one out......

The IWM film sales are here:

Sadly they haven't converted all the films to 'video' yet and so you might need a good description or the reference number before you can even get to the point of asking for a copy. I just put this link up in case you are given an IWM reference by the film makers.

In any event - good luck!

Hi Again

Just had a look on the IWM site - if you find the film "maximum Effort" you get a nice idea of the general life of a Lancaster crew.

(Tip you can play all of the digitised films on the site - it helps to click on the 'Digitised only' box when you do a search.)
