M.o.T.a.T Lancaster Repaint

Post by wayne »

Hi all,
Some of you will know the Lancaster at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MoTaT) is being repainted.
For those of you that don't know, after much discussion the New Zealand Bomber Command Association have decided to change the codes on the port side of the Lancaster
from SR-V of 101 Squadron, to JN-M "The Captains Fancy" of 'C' Flight, 75 (NZ) Squadron.
The Captains Fancy flew at least 104 ops with the squadron, and it had been proposed to fly the aircraft back to New Zealand after the war, but like so many other aircraft, it was scrapped.
The first photos are via Peter Wheeler, of the N.Z. Bomber Command Association.
The first is the SR-V codes being blacked out.
The second shows the nose art that will be applied.

I'll keep you updated as work progresses.

Great stuff, Wayne.
I think it only right for your Lancaster in New Zealand to be accompanied with the squadron codes.
What are your thoughts on squadron codes or AA-? ( AA Apr 1940 - Oct 1945) to
JN (Feb 1943 - Oct 1945, 'C' Flt only)

Hi Wayne,

Great to see a No.3 Group Squadron get recognised, and what better squadron than No.75(NZ) Squadron.

I have only one question, and it something I have been researching for a while now, namely GH. Why did this Lancaster have white GH bars? the vast majority had yellow. In the early days of GH white was very briefly used but quickly change to yellow as white was deemed to be difficult I.D in daylight.

Can you shed any light on this mate.

Kind regards

Hi John,

I have no problem with the 'JN' code. "C Flight" had been using it starting back with the Stirling's.
Lancaster NE181 flew at least 104 ops with that code and nose art, so it's fitting it should be remembered for that, bringing the crews back safely each time.

I do admit that the 'AA' codes are probably better known as the codes of 75 Squadron, but as I said NE181 flew with those codes and nose art.

Steve,
I'll fire off a question to Peter Wheeler regarding the white GH bars. It's probably not too late to change them to yellow.

Cheers guys,
Wayne.

Sorry guys, haven't been able to get on the forum for two days, had trouble connecting to the page.
Bruno has explained the problem in 'The Mess Inn' section.

Steve,
Nothing back from Peter yet, but will let you know his answer as soon as I hear.

There is a photo however, of progress on the nose art. "The Captain" has no legs yet, and I hear it's being hand painted.
See below.

I stumbled across this while researching my Uncles air force experiences. He was RCAF air crew assigned to 101 squadron. As it turns out his lancaster SRV PB 258, was shot down Aug 13/44. By poking around here and there I have been able to acquire some pieces of the wreckage. I was wondering if anyone here has an image odfthe nose art on V for Venus?

Thanks

Joe
