Re: For beer connoisseurs

Saffron Walden....... no, hardly for poseurs - have not been for ages but remember it as quite nice and ordinary ...... but then things change! Talking to a chap last Sunday from London (well I do make concessions) who had recently visited Poole - which always seemed fairly civilised to me - and he ...

Re: Air Commodore Gordon Steege 1917 - 2013

Yes... some of these chaps have had an extra ordinary career. A neighbour (now deceased) started on Heyfords, when War broke out he was put onto Battles and was shot down in France. Escaped and went onto Blenheims and all of the "heavies". He ended up, after hostilities commanding a squadr...

Re: For beer connoisseurs

Not surprised at that old chap - Rye is notoriously expensive and always has been - it is the poseurs etc., bit like parts of North Norfolk. Think I remember the place you mention - and of course the Mermaid Inn was rather pricy too.

Re: For beer connoisseurs

Well there you are......... civilised and lucid! See ... told you so! Do you also know I always thought Duxford was in Cambridgeshire - strange, perhaps they moved it after the airfield became non operational? North Essex of course is quite nice - not until you get nearer to London that it becomes a...

Re: For beer connoisseurs

Excellent - another tripper leaving! Hurrah. I feel slightly displeased with myself as I forgot you were coming and as our trip is delayed for a day or three we could have met. But it will soon pass. So you found something "interesting" in Dereham.... what exactly - do tell. But in fairnes...

Wing Commander Ken Wallis

Peacefully last Sunday morning - not long after receiving his "clasp".

Amazing fellow - absolutely bright as a button - could chat for ages and never miss a beat nor repeat himself.

Re: For beer connoisseurs

Well Neale we will make allowances for your unsophisticated palate. These beers do not travel well so cannot be enjoyed in your fair Country. Spitfire comes from Kent which runs a poor second to Norfolk. Lancaster is by Thwaites from Blackburn. Yes.........OK. To my detriment there are still many pu...

For beer connoisseurs

A stirling beer....... Brewed by one of our local micro breweries - not tired it yet - but no doubt will be able to force one down..... in the interests of the distribution of knowledge. It is described as a "malty red bitter with toffee notes(?)". ABV 4.5%. http://www.beestonbrewery.co.uk...

Re: Sad But True ...........

Yes - my Uncle was a Wop/AG and on the night he was killed he was in the mid upper - on a Halifax BI MkII - which resembled a goldfish bowl being even more exposed psychologically than the Lancaster mid upper! I often wondered how it must have been like though - right up there - sticking out like th...

Re: Flying model Lancaster

Max, it is controlled electrically (and to me that is a very dark and mysterious place). Principally there is a small board with - less than an inch square with all kinds of gadgetry and 3 "pots' (?) which you can adjust to give duration and speed of the motors so that for example you can taxi ...
