Re: A Thousand Shall Fall
Thank you both for the above. It's a book that I'll add to my get-one-day list. The 214 Squadron site is a good one but in all its images I've yet to come across a BU-H, which is why the cover of the book sparked my interest. Having looked at the 214 Squadron ORBs held by the National Archives for J...

Re: Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1944
Just in case anyone comes across this who is researching Stirling EH933, I've completed my investigation into the crash site and believe that in all likelihood the aircraft came down on the hill above Bridgetown, Exton, Somerset. I've sent a copy of my document to the Air Historical Branch and asked...

Re: A Thousand Shall Fall
That's an interesting book cover. I have a great-uncle who flew and died in a BU-H (BF330), though I appreciate there were a number of Stirlings which carried the BU-H markings. Does the book include a period with 214 Squadron? (214 flew Wellingtons then Stirlings before switching to the Flying Fort...

Re: Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1944
Just to update this thread... Firstly, thank you Alan for highlighting the registration district for John Kerry’s death. I’ve since checked the rest of crew, and they are all listed under the Exmoor district. I’ve also been in touch with Exton Parish Council (Somerset) to see if there is any local k...

Re: Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1944
Thank you Alan The Exton 6 miles SSE of Exeter is indeed in Devon, but I'm not sure it's the correct one. The official crash report gives the circumstances as: Aircraft became airborne at 21.40 - hours on 26-1-44 and proceeded on the prescribed exercise. At 23.50 - hours in the vicinity of Winsford,...

Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1944
Does anyone have a copy of the above? Specifically, I'm looking for the reference for EH 933, a Stirling Mk III, which crashed on the night of 26/27 January 1944. Every reference I've found, including the official accident report (kindly supplied by James) gives the crash site close to Exton in DEVO...

Re: Heavy Conversion Unit Records
Alan Many thanks for your reply. It's good to know that there is at least some info at the NA, even if it is not digitised. I will also follow up the lead you have given regarding Ross McNeill. The airman I am particularly concerned with here is Sgt John Kerry, 2221041, an air gunner I believe (RAFV...

Heavy Conversion Unit Records
Does anyone have any idea whether any records exist for flights / personnel of 1660 HCU ?
In particular I'm looking for the period late 1943 / January 1944.
I can't see anything in the National Archives.
Cheers
Bob

Re: Striling EH 933 Accident Report
Just a quick follow-up to this. On the disc that James kindly sent, there is reference to another Stirling which crashed in similar circumstances to that of my great-uncle's (whose plane was EH 933) . . . EE 956 came down not far from where I now live, so I looked into it a bit further. While I have...

Re: Striling EH 933 Accident Report
James Many thanks for the above, and for the disc which arrived this morning. I've already come across references on it to EH 933, EE 956, LK 517 and R 9265 (which all appear to have suffered a similar fate in mid-air) and (the seemingly unrelated) EH 947 and EH 960. Interestingly, one of these airc...
