Thanks Dennis but would there have been an approximate time frame, like 10 - 12 weeks?
What would happen if it rained non stop, say, for a week, what would the course of activities be?
Sorry to hound, mate. Just that I have never really known much, if at all of HCU's.

My uncle flew Stirlings before being posted to 50 Squadron at Skellingthorpe towards end of the war.I have seen his logbook but cannot remember which HCU it was.He was the rear gunner.

Hello Pilotdreamer,

Hope you have the opportunity to further scrutinise your uncles' details. We would certainly like to hear more from you, about your uncle.
Regards,
John

Hi Maggiemae,

You may have this already, from the Operational Record Book of 75 (NZ) squadron.

23/1/43.
Operations. Attack Against Targets At Lorient.
Nine aircraft were detailed to attack the above target, with bombs of 1,000 lb 500 lb and 4 lb incendiaries. This was a very successful and concentrated attack. All aircraft reported that their bombs fell in the target area. Large fires were seen to be lighting up the whole area. A fair amount of heavy, medium and light flak was encountered, only a few searchlights were seen. A few enemy aircraft were seen, but no combats took place. The weather was very clear at the target and visibility was good. R9248 captained by Sgt R. M. Kidd failed to return.

Sgt Kidd, R. M. Captain.
Sgt Schofield, J. W. Nav
Sgt Mitchell, G. F. F/E
Sgt Berry, E. W/Op
Sgt Torrance, B. A/B
Sgt Brewster, J. E. M/U/G
Sgt Fowler, P. D. R/G

Regards,
Wayne.

Thanks Wayne

:) I have the Squadron records and briefing maps as well as various other pieces of info. I have been pursuing dad's exploits after his landing in France and have managed to contact the niece of a Sgt Miles Benton Jones USAAF who was shot down on the same day in the same area and along with several others they evaded together. It's a big jig saw puzzle but I think I have most of the pieces now. Getting access to the American records also filled in some of the blanks as well. 8-)

ps. Dad and I visited the graves of his crew in 1994 along with the brother and sister of Sgt. Berry who tracked him down through a blind letter to the Gvt. of New Zealand in the late 80's.
