Hi All

The Rear FN4A Turret is finished for now - some pics and links to animations, hopefully the 'jumping' ammo belts won't look silly and will look like they are being shaken by the guns firing! Muzzle flash and searing tracers in later animations I'm afraid, I still need to get the modelling finished!

Will upload some stills later..

Hi

Thanks Richard!

Stills as promised - last for now honest! Already onto the Bomb Sight, progress attached.

Can I thank Paul Mc Master and John Blair of the Ulster Aviation Society for unstinting (virtual) access to their wonderful rebuild of an FN4 turret, and to Walter Lindekens who was also involved in the build and research of the turret. Guys any detail or accuracy with this model is down to you!

Cheers
James

The sight isn't finished yet - there are few pictures of the Stirling with the sight installed. One day I'll animate the view the bomb aimer would have had and produce a bombing run just to see what it would have been like!

The Bomb Sight 99.9% complete. Much more complex than I thought and in looking into the construction I've read a bit about it's use and it seems that the Bomb Aimer had a fair amount of things to do before he could release the bombs. He is often shown issuing instructions to the pilot but on the Stirling he had a left-right control which I imagine was from the auto-pilot so while it flew the aircraft straight and level he could 'steer'.

The instrument is quite dark and the night would have made everything a black shadow, but there are controls that he needed to read and set so I imagine that the two lights on those extending may have been on all the time and aimed at the small white figures.

While quite a large item it looks lost in the aircraft itself, you have to wonder where the front gunner would have put his feet without damaging the sight!

thought these might help James, they're from some course notes of R.A.M. Thompson who was on the flight engineers course at St. Athan in 1942. I realise they are not accurate drawings..but.. They do show the colour of the fixtures!!!!

Hi Hindenburg

Thanks for the drawings, I've got the Engineers panel right mainly because those are standard instruments and even a monochrome picture gives clues in shades of grey, but I would never have guessed the blue or the green wheels.

Interesting that the fuse links (if that's what they are) are yellow.

Cheers
