Kitty did point the way. After the Ilyushin was checked out it had to be a Daimler Benz 600 series engine (inverted V) so had to look at all possible installations, even the Japanese Aichi M6A, Yokosuka D4Y and Kawasaki Ki-61. The position of the exhaust in relation to the wing being the main difference between this and other engine installations also the air intake being very Italian. A scan of William Green's War Planes of the Second World War Fighters Vol 2 came up with the solution.
