Short Stirling & RAF Bomber Command Forum

I am researching the war dead of our village, the names to be added to our new war memorial. One of the WW2 losses was

1280779, Leading Aircraftsman Donald John Patrick Macdonald, RAF Volunteer Reserve who died 7 December 1940, aged 24.

I have his CWGC entry but would any members be able to point me to any other records that might give me further information, such as enlistment date.

My main area of research has been WW1 but I suspect this may be more difficult for WW2, with fewer records available online?

Or have I come to the wrong place?

Hi ... would suggest an enlistment date of within this number block ..

1250001 to 1299800 May 1940 Uxbridge, Gloucester and Penarth

according to CWGC there is no mention of a squadron/trade ( eg Nav etc) so hard to see if he was aircrew ( at that time I am sure LAC's were still an aircrew rank) or under training ... or result of enemy action ...

Will have a look in the Chorley books to see if there is an entry on that date..

Strangely enough, the only death recorded for a D.J.P MacDonald by the GRO, gives year of death as 1941, with Chippenham as place of death.

The headstone refers to him as being 'Cadet Pilot' if that helps?
